This is a rough estimate for education, not financial advice. Real CD rates and early withdrawal penalties vary by bank; annual compounding is assumed. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

What is a CD ladder?

A CD ladder splits your money across certificates of deposit with staggered maturity dates instead of locking it all into one term. As each CD matures, you can spend the money, or reinvest it into a new long CD to keep the ladder going. This gives you regular access to part of your money while usually earning more than a savings account, and it reduces the risk of locking in a bad rate for a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Do all rungs need the same amount?

No, but equal amounts make it easy to compare and reinvest. This calculator assumes equal amounts across rungs.

What happens when a CD matures?

You choose: withdraw it, or roll it into a new CD, commonly at the ladder's longest term, to keep the ladder rotating.
